Medical marijuana dispensary Great Basin Care won unanimous approval from the Henderson City Council and could be open as soon as this summer, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The dispensary will be located at 4300 E. Sunset Road.

In the same meeting the Council also approved four marijuana cultivation facilities, which will be located in industrial-zoned areas east of U.S. Highway 95.

While this is the first approved medical marijuana dispensary in Henderson, a second – Jenny’s Dispensary – is currently seeking a new location before a hearing on April 14 after its initial proposed location in a shopping center on Eastern Avenue, near retirement community Sun City Anthem, was opposed by residents. Three others are also currently in the works in Henderson.

Eric Hartley of the Review-Journal notes the “stark contrast” of this “drama-free” meeting to the convoluted process that the City of Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County utilized to rank dispensary applicants independently of the State of Nevada, approving some the state did not while the state approved others that were not approved locally.

“That led to dueling lawsuits and left questions over the future of many dispensaries. Henderson prevented such disputes by waiting for the state to choose which dispensaries to approve,” Hartley writes.

The lawsuits were lobbed against Clark County for trying “to force the state’s hand without regard to the state’s ranking system” to get approval for its 18 favored applicants. Only 10 applicants have gained the necessary approvals to open from both the state and the county, even though the law allows for up to 18 in unincorporated Clark County.
